This month's list exhibits the same stability of January's report, with phishing threats still in the top spots. However, currently the most notorious threat on this list is W32/Tibs.gen, aka "Storm Worm," which continues to severely impact worldwide mailboxes in successive waves. According to Guillaume Lovet, EMEA threat response team leader for Fortinet, no less than 36 different variants of the Storm Worm were seen active this month, although one variant itself accounted for nearly 60 percent of related detections.
"The overwhelming presence of the Storm Worm is not without consequence, as it being leveraged to generate and relay massive amounts of spam," Lovet said. "However, the battle against spam is not lost. A purely factual analysis of the situation tends to prove that in the final race to arms against content analysis filters - such as those featured in Fortinet's offering - spammers are losing ground."
